Introduction
This assignment critically analyses two contemporary communication
scenarios through a decolonial perspective, drawing on the concepts explored
in Units 1 and 2 of the COM2614 module. The purpose of the assignment is
to examine how coloniality continues to shape communication, media, digital
platforms, and systems of knowledge long after the end of formal colonial
rule. Decolonial communication challenges the dominance of Western
knowledge systems by recognising diverse ways of knowing, particularly
those rooted in African experiences, indigenous knowledge systems, and the
realities of the Global South. Rather than viewing communication as neutral,
a decolonial approach reveals how power influences whose voices are heard,
whose knowledge is recognised, and whose identities are represented in
contemporary society.
The first scenario examines the removal of community-generated Wikipedia
articles about local South African history while an AI-generated article
containing misleading references is accepted as reliable. This scenario
explores the concepts of coloniality of knowledge, coloniality of being, and
coloniality of power by analysing how digital platforms privilege Western
academic sources over indigenous knowledge, oral histories, and community
archives. It also considers the role of artificial intelligence in reproducing
existing inequalities within global knowledge production.
The second scenario focuses on the representation of African footballers
within global football institutions and international media. It examines how
scouting practices, media narratives, and European football systems shape
perceptions of African talent and intelligence. Through the concepts of
coloniality of power, coloniality of knowledge, and coloniality of being, the
discussion analyses how racial stereotypes and Eurocentric assumptions
continue to influence opportunities available to African athletes and the ways
they are represented in global sport.
