C1. Roles of a Leader and a Manager

Management is a formal role that is addressed by authority. Management is prone to

focus on task-oriented to maintain the status quo, organizing and directing individuals under

boundaries to meet the standard. The management goal is to achieve the task in a predictable

way and with consistent quality. Leadership, on the other hand, is individually motivated and

self-starter. Leadership is focused on being people-oriented to make improvements and achieve a

positive outcome. Leadership is not about completing the task but how you approach the

assignment and related to others.

C2. Present Leadership and Management Skills

Three leadership skills that I recognized in myself are interpersonal understanding,

collaboration, and self-compassion. Working as a team is a work culture on my medical-surgical

unit floor. I am always present and available for team members who need a helping hand.

Interpersonal skills are present as I am personable and approachable. I try to take time to listen

and acknowledge my patient’s needs. Employing empathy and asking questions to gain insight

into the patient aspect is part of the interpersonal skills I apply in my everyday work. I am

working collaboratively with the team toward a shared goal which is prioritizing the best patient

care. Working as a med-surg nurse requires me to collaborate with relevant professional teams

such as physicians, radiology, physical therapists, pharmacy, dietician, and other departments on

regular basis about patients’ treatment plans. At the same time, I need to have a good

understanding of the role of each assigned department. Self-compassion is the most crucial

leadership skill I will not ignore. I cannot provide good care to others if I can’t be kind to myself

first. I am being mindful of my own needs and humanity. I recognize myself when I get burnout
