Part One: Analyzing the Impact of Implicit Bias and Stereotype Threat on DEI
Develop a 2- to 3-paragraph summary for each of the following rubric criteria as they relate to
the ability to view others through a DEI lens.
1. Describe the socio-psychological implications of implicit bias on our ability to view
others through a DEI lens. Address the following in your response:
A. How can the assumptions we make about social groups unconsciously influence
our attitudes, language, and actions in subtle ways?
B. Given the shift from unconscious to conscious perception, describe how an
implicit bias could become an explicit bias.
C. Given the notion of bias as a learned construct, describe what you believe is the
most effective step that a person could take to unlearn bias.
The assumptions we make about social groups unconsciously influence our
attitudes, language, and actions in subtle ways by the implicit bias that we use, especially
in group settings. Since people are easy to be followers, when in group settings people
tend to steer towards the values and beliefs of the other members in the group. People
tend to do this behavior in order to be accepted and not neglected in the group. The
behaviors and beliefs that we have are formed by are our social settings: family, friends,
and from school. Instead of having your own beliefs, you construct your beliefs with a
mixture of others around you who you believe have a sense of intelligence. You listen to
these people without doing research for yourself and let these beliefs become your own.
An implicit bias can become an explicit bias by letting your own values and
beliefs make the decision vs. what others believe. People tend to conform to their groups
beliefs without realizing it can make them look prejudice in their own way. Learning to
fully understand the situation and learning to handle it on your own beliefs and values
helps construct explicit bias. The most effective step that a person could take to unlearn
bias would be being your own person and making your own beliefs and values. You need
to believe in yourself and constructs those believes and stick with them to have a sense of
independence.
2. Describe the socio-psychological implications of stereotype threat on our ability to view
others through a DEI lens. Address the following in your response:
A. What are the factors that could place a person at risk of confirming a negative
stereotype about their own social group?
B. If your group suffers from a negative stereotype, what are the implications of this
judgment on psychosocial well-being?
