OBJECTIVES OF THE TOPIC :
1.Define marsh
2.Describe the characteristics of marsh and formation
3.Identify the types of marshes
4.Give the adaptive features of plants and animals found in fresh marsh habitat.
RELEVANT VERSE:JOB 40:21 "Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the
reeds in the marsh".

Terrestrial habitats refer to life on land. The nature of soil, rain fall and temperature
are the major factors affecting the nature of terrestrial habitats.
It is divided into four groups. These are
(i)Marsh
(ii)Rain forest
(iii)Savanna or Grassland
(iv)Arid land
Marsh habitat is defined as a lowland habitat which is usually flooded or water
logged all the the time.Naturally, grassses and shrubs grow grow in marsh but when
trees grow there,it is called a swamp. Marsh is often regarded as a transition
betwen the aquatic and terrestrial habitats.
MARSH
Marshland, treeless land in which the water table is at, above, or just below the
surface of the ground; it is dominated by grasses, reeds, sedges, and cattails. These
plants typify emergent vegetation, which has its roots in soil covered or saturated
with water and its leaves held above water.
TYPES OF MARSHES
1. Freshwater marshes occur on land, just beyond the limits of the salt water
marshes and beyond the areas influenced by tide.In this area, fresh water from
riversoverflows the river banksto flood the adjoining lowlands resulting in the
formtion of fresh water marshes.
2.Salt marshes occurs along the coastal areas and are influenced by tides.Because
the water along the coast is salty,it mixes up with fresh water from rivers to form
brackish water. The action of tide in the water causes the flooding of adjoining
lowlands with brackish water resulting in the formation of salt water
marshes. These are best developed on the Atlantic coasts of North America and
Europe.
