Disruptive Innovation that Improved Healthcare Outcomes

Wearable health technology is a disruptive innovation that has improved healthcare

outcomes by enabling the monitoring of individuals and assisting with diagnosis. Any data from

these devices “may be integrated with health systems and potentially inform care plans” (Kang &

Exworthy, 2022). There are many different examples of these wearable devices, such as smart

watches, activity trackers, and devices that can even screen for blood cancer cells. Technology is

advancing every day, and the potential for more smart devices is being discussed daily. Some of

these ideas are teeth sensors, smart contact lenses, and even electronic tattoos. Wearable devices

have shown greater convenience, reducing the need for in-person appointments, and these

devices provide a broader data set than just what would be obtained during a visit. Having a

broader data set is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Another way this innovation can

improve healthcare is by possibly facilitating behavior change and motivating patients to

exercise more.

Telehealth is another innovative disruption that has improved healthcare by enhancing

access when physical access is not possible. One significant benefit of telemedicine is improving

healthcare access for patients with disabilities. Approximately “27% of US adults have a

functional disability and face barriers accessing healthcare” (Phuong et al., 2023). Another

benefit is improving access for patients who live in areas where care is economically

unaffordable. It can facilitate improved engagement in healthcare by reducing mobility barriers

and wait times. Telehealth can also mitigate the spread of infection by allowing those who are

sick to stay at home, thus preventing the spread of infection to others who may be

immunocompromised.

Nurse Innovator Role in Conceptual Model

An MSN-prepared nurse innovator can demonstrate the role of nurse manager of the

healing environment by influencing public policy and promoting social justice for all patients.

There are many ways this nurse innovator will implement a healing environment for their

patients, starting with fresh air and cleanliness. An example of a nurse innovator in the

healthcare environment is the holistic approach to pain management during hospitalizations. A

patient’s needs are not only physical but also encompass emotional, social, spiritual, and

environmental aspects. Patients suffer from “not only physiological challenges but also profound

psychological distress, social isolation, and existential concerns” (Koromeli et al., 2025). An

example of a nurse innovator utilizing a healing environment to support pain management is

access to nature. Barring any allergies, having a healing garden placed in the courtyard of the

facility and accommodating a plant in each room. Studies have shown that access to nature can

reduce requests for pain medication and even shorten recovery times. In addition to incorporating

plants for holistic recovery, the nurse innovator would also request changes to the hospital's color

scheme. Painting in blues and greens can promote relaxation and improve moods, making it feel

less like a hospital setting and more relaxing. Emphasizing the importance of a compassionate

presence is vital in creating a healing environment. Practicing active listening, addressing a
