A group of words that has a subject and a predicate.
15. Independent Clause
An independent clause is a complete sentence. It expresses a complete
thought and can stand alone.
Example: "Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz."
16. Dependent Clause
Begins with a subordinating conjunction and does not express a complete
thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence.
Examples:
"What the girl did was not very helpful." (dependent clause

"He finally finished his novel, after months of research." (dependent

17. Direct Object
The person, place, or thing that is directly affected by the action of the verb.
Example: "Jimmy fed the dog." (dog is the direct object)
18. Indirect Object
The person, place, or thing that is indirectly affected by the action of the
verb.
Example: "Give him the book." (him is the indirect object)
19. Phrase
A group of two or more words that act as a single part of speech in a
sentence.
Example: "in the morning," "running quickly"
20. Predicate
The part of a sentence that tells what the subject does or what is done to
the subject.
Example: "The cat sleeps." (sleeps is the predicate)
21. Predicate Adjective
Follows a linking verb and helps to explain the subject.
Example: "The soup is hot." (hot describes the soup)
22. Predicate Nominative
A noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and helps explain or rename
the subject.
Example: "She is a doctor." (doctor renames the subject)
