Did my project follow my revised plan (from the mid-project review)?
The majority of my project followed the plan that I had set out in my Mid-Project Review.
Using a Gantt Chart to map out my time has allowed me to monitor my progress and maximise
the free time that I have. However, whilst I was able to visualise and allocate my time, I came
across the problem of the scarcity of my time. As I had my mock examinations, I saw that my
time had been stretched thinly across my four subjects and EPQ. Consequently, I made the
decision to sacrifice some of the time that I had dedicated to writing my report, to revising for
my exams. I had not accurately accounted for the intensity of my subjects, which led to an
adjustment in the timeline of my product. Due to the time delay, I have had to postpone the
reading of my final resources that were recommended to me by the specialists from my primary
research. I have had to shift the deadline for my report and Project Product Review. This is to
ensure that I am able to complete all the writing I need to, whilst also maintaining that I am
able to perfect the writing to the best of my ability.
The above Gantt chart has been adjusted for the reallocation of my time from the Mid-Project
Review.
Whilst this alteration to my schedule did not constitute a significant setback, it did result in a
more compressed timeframe for completing the project. This reduction in time has demanded a
more efficient approach to both my final research and writing, requiring me to prioritise the
, most important elements of my report. To catch up on this missing time, I have decided to
dedicate the majority of my time to writing my report. I will allocate my free periods at school
to homework so that I can solely focus on writing my report at home.
In the Mid-Project Review, I decided to increase the scope of my study to include two new
subsections titled “Mathematics” and “Mathematical and Analytical Philosophy”. This increase
in the field of my research has given more perspective to my topic, as it introduces the Vienna
Circle holistically and delves into the complexities of their work, since the Vienna Circle was
predominantly a philosophical group.
I intend to write the “Introduction” and “Abstract” sections of my report after I have finished
writing the rest of the report. I have made this decision as I believe in order to accurately
introduce my topic, I need a complete understanding of everything I am including in my report.
This will lead to well-rounded sections, as I can accurately introduce the Vienna Circle.
Having finalised my contents table in my Mid-Project review, I felt there was no need to make
any amendments to it. I found that having this table finalised before I began writing was very
useful as it provided a framework for how to structure my report. The table outlines the key
sections and subsections, helping me to organise the information in a clear and methodical
way. It also keeps me focused when I am writing the report, as I often refer back to the title of
the section I am writing to make sure that what I am writing is relevant to the topic.
As the Vienna Circle is primarily a philosophical group, there are many new philosophical
terms that I am including in the report. These terms are not common and an understanding of
their meaning is imperative in order to understand the Vienna Circle’s work. Initially, I thought
that including a glossary at the end of my report would be the most effective way to combat
this issue, however, when I was looking over my report, I found it was most useful to have the
definitions of the key terms at the bottom of the page, instead of having to flick through
multiple pages to find the glossary. For this reason, I have opted to use footnotes in my report
instead. These not only serve as a substitute glossary for the reader, but also works for me as a
reminder of the definitions which saves me time when writing my report as I do not have to go
through my notes to find the correct connotation.
My primary research, in the form of emails sent to Austrian Historian specialists in the field
Mathematics, significantly helped me in the development of my report as their responses
provided me relevant insights into the work of the Vienna Circle. I was directed to relevant
literature that not only accelerated the process of gathering information, but made it easier to
begin writing, as all of the research was tailored to my project. Having this information ready
meant that I did not have to waste time researching whilst writing my report, which makes up
for some of the lost time from my mock exams. To stay motivated whilst writing, I have made
a checklist of the subtopics from my contents table. Being able to check off subtopics as I write
is not only gratifying, but it increases my focus as I have specific goals that I can act on. This
also makes the writing process less daunting, as I have multiple, small targets to work on rather
than one massive target that seems unapproachable.
