CNS: SENSORY AND MOTOR DISORDERS
Introduction to
Neurodegenerative Disorders
Neurodegenerative disorders progressively target and destroy certain areas of brain
function. This leads to tremors, paralysis, reduced cognitive function, poor memory
recall, and speech and/or language problems. These debilitating conditions may have
a significant impact on friends and family even before a client requires total care.
Dementia and Parkinson’s disease are two examples of common neurodegenerative
conditions.
This learning module focuses on the disease process of neurodegenerative disorders
and enables you to meet the following course outcomes:

• CO 1: Analyze pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with selected disease
states across the lifespan.
• CO 2: Examine the way in which homeostatic, adaptive, and compensatory
physiological mechanisms can be supported and/or altered through specific
therapeutic interventions across the lifespan.
• CO 3: Distinguish risk factors associated with selected disease states across the
lifespan.
• CO 4: Integrate advanced pathophysiological concepts in the diagnosis and
treatment of health problems in selected populations.

Characteristics of Neurodegenerative
Disorders
Which of the following is a common characteristic of neurodegenerative disorders?
Reversible neurological deficits
Rapid progression and immediate onset of symptoms
Progressive loss of structure or function of neurons
Primarily affecting the peripheral nervous system

Neurodegenerative disorders are primarily characterized by the progressive
degeneration of the structures and functions of the brain (not the peripheral nervous
system), especially neurons. This process is usually gradual and worsens over time
(not rapidly), leading to irreversible (not reversible) symptoms, including memory
loss, impaired judgment, and motor dysfunction.

Risk Factors for Neurodegenerative
Disorders
Which of the following are risk factors for developing neurodegenerative disorders?
Select all that apply.
Genetic predisposition
History of traumatic brain injuries
Aging
High levels of physical activity in early adulthood
Exposure to certain environmental toxins

Genetic predisposition and aging are well-known risk factors for neurodegenerative
disorders. As individuals age, the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
increases. Exposure to environmental toxins has been linked to an increased risk of
neurodegenerative diseases. History of traumatic brain injuries is also considered a
risk factor, particularly for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.
High levels of physical activity in early adulthood can reduce the risk of
neurodegenerative diseases.

Differentiating Neurodegenerative Disorders
Which neurodegenerative disorder is primarily caused by the destruction of
dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain?
Huntington's disease
Alzheimer's disease
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is caused by the progressive loss of dopamineproducing neurons
in the substantia nigra. This loss leads to the primary symptoms of Parkinson's, such
as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability.
Although the other options are neurodegenerative diseases, they exhibit different
pathophysiological characteristics.
