Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare
Disruptive innovations introduce new technologies or processes that significantly improve
healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. One example of disruptive innovation in healthcare
is the use of telehealth services. This was disruptive because it shifted the model of care from
a physically co-located encounter to a virtual one, challenging traditional reimbursement
models and geographical barriers to access. Telehealth allows healthcare providers to deliver
care remotely using video conferencing and digital monitoring technologies. This innovation
has improved access to healthcare, particularly for patients in rural or underserved
communities, while also reducing travel time and healthcare costs. Studies have shown that
telehealth interventions can improve patient outcomes, increase access to care and enhance
chronic disease management (Shigekawa et al., 2018).
Another example of disruptive innovation is the implementation of electronic health records
(EHRs). This innovation disrupted long-standing paper-based documentation process,
fundamentally altering workflow, data accessibility, and interdisciplinary communication. EHR
systems allow healthcare providers to store and access patient information digitally, improving
communication and coordination among healthcare teams. EHRs support clinical decision-
making by providing real-time access to patient data, medication records, and diagnostic
results. Research has demonstrated that the adoption of EHR systems improves patient
safety by reducing medication errors and enhancing the continuity of care (McGonigle &
Mastrian, 2022). These innovations illustrate how technology-driven changes can transform
healthcare systems and lead to improved patient outcomes.
