Reflection notes Class - X
Nature of light :- Today, scientist view that light having dual nature sometimes behaving like
a particle and sometimes like a wave.
Light :- Light is a form of energy that can be detected by our eyes.
Or
Light is a form of energy which enables us to see objects which emit or reflect light.
Source of light :- We get light from various sources like sun, electric bulb, candle and oil
lamp etc.
Luminous source of light :- The objects which emit their own light are called luminous
objects.
Sun and star are natural and electric lamp, oil lamp are man-made sources of light.
Non luminous source of light :- The non luminous object, do not emit light. However, such
objects become visible due to the reflection of the light falling on them.
Moon does not emit light it becomes visible due to the reflection of the sunlight falling on it.
Characteristics of light :- Some common characteristics of light are given below ;
● Light is an electromagnetic radiation.
● Light travels in a straight line this property of light is termed as the rectilinear
propogation of light.
● Light is a transverse wave, and does not need any medium to travel. Light can travel
through vacuum it's speed through vaccam is 3x10^8 m/s.
● The velocity of light change when it goes from one medium to another. For examples,
the speed of light in water is 2.25x10^8 m/s and in glass 2x10^8 m/s.
● Wavelength of light also changes when it goes from one medium to another.
● The frequency of the light wave remains the same in all media.
,Ray of light :- A straight line drawn in the direction of propagation of light is called a ray of
light.
Beam of light :- A bundle of the adjacent light rays is called a beam of light. A beam of light
can be
● parallel beam of light
● Converging beam of light
● Diverging beam of light
, Reflection of light :- When a ray of light falls on a smooth polished surface, such as a mirror,
it returns back into the same medium. This is called reflection of light.
Or
Bouncing back of a ray of light when it is falling on a smooth polished surface, is called
reflection of light.
