Instructor’s Manual for Introduction to Political Science

Chapter 1
What Is Politics and What Is Political Science?

Chapter Overview
This chapter provides an overview of the ways in which politics is formed by the choices people
make about rules and institutions. It also focuses on the ways in which political scientists do
empirical and normative research to understand the ways in which decisions should be and are
made. The activities below encourage students to think about the discipline and the concepts as
well as how politics impacts their daily lives.

Introduction
ACTIVITY: Politics in Our Lives
Purpose This classroom activity is designed to get students to start thinking about how politics
affects their daily lives and how the study of political science can improve their understanding of
the world. They will begin to understand the crucial role technology plays in the interactions with
political actors in the 21st century.
This activity will enable students to understand the ways in which they interact with political
actors, through what means they interact with them, and the differences in interaction between
different polities. The activity serves as a useful segue into the course as a whole.
Task Divide the class into diverse groups of three or four, ideally made up of students from
different US states or even different countries.
Once groups have been assigned, ask students to answer the following questions.
• What political entities have I interacted with (foreign office, the police, the DMV, NGOs,
etc.) and why (getting a visa, filing a noise complaint, etc.)?
• What rules did I have to follow in this interaction?
• What means did I use to interact with these entities (online, in person, filling out forms,
etc.)?
• How accessible are these services? Did it take a long time to find the website or fill out all
the forms?
• If I did not have a smartphone (or equivalent technology), how much harder would it
have been to access the same services?
• Are the services accessible at all without internet service?
• How was my interaction with these political entities a form of political behavior?
Give students about 15–20 minutes to answer these questions, and then bring students together
to briefly describe what they found. Allow some time for groups to compare their findings with
one another.
