Service Plan Brief for Mobile Clinic for Lactation & Breastfeeding Education & Treatment

Proposed Nursing Service Idea

The proposed nursing service idea is to establish a mobile clinic to provide support and education

regarding breastfeeding and lactation as well as treat medical concerns related to breastfeeding.

This service line will be nurse-driven as the nurses will be certified as advanced nurse lactation

consultants, allowing them to provide education and administer medications. An ARNP will be

on-site to run the mobile clinic and be able to order any testing and treatment for potential thrush,

yeast, mastitis, or other breastfeeding diagnoses.

Importance

The recent formula shortage with the covid 19 pandemic in the United States has increased the

need for education and support in breastfeeding. This will decrease the need for formula if

breastfeeding and lactation support is more readily available to new mothers (Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention. (2022). Currently, there are 605 baby-friendly facilities in the United

States, representing 27.12% of annual U.S. births (Baby Friendly USA (n.d.). The initiative to

help new mothers learn to breastfeed continues to grow momentum, but small rural hospitals are

lacking in the criteria to be considered baby-friendly and require assistance for moms outside of

the hospital to establish and maintain breastfeeding. Infants that are still exclusively breastfed at

3 months is 52.8% and then drops drastically to 27% at six months of age (Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention. (2019). This would provide an opportunity to offer a nurse-driven

service to infants and mothers that provides up-to-date and accurate information on breastfeeding

education and treatment. This mobile clinic will assist in solving the challenge of patients living

in a rural or low-income setting by getting a clinic that is knowledgeable in lactation and

breastfeeding to their region.
