, 1 · Matter, Measurement & the SI System
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything with mass and volume. It exists as
solid, liquid, or gas, and is classified as pure substances (elements, compounds) or mixtures (homogeneous,
heterogeneous).

Physical vs. Chemical Changes
A physical change alters form but not identity (melting ice). A chemical change produces new substances (burning
wood). Signs of a chemical change: color change, gas, precipitate, heat/light.

Significant Figures
All non-zero digits count; zeros between non-zeros count; leading zeros never count; trailing zeros count only with a
decimal point. In multiplication/division, the answer keeps the fewest sig figs of any factor.

Key constant: Avogadro's number NA = 6.022 × 10²³ particles per mole.
