Key Terms

● Liver - Made up a lot of cylinders called hepatic lobules.
● Hepatic lobules- Made up of liver cells called he[patcytes.
● Hepatocytes- Central vein that passes through the middle that will drain blood from
the microscopic structures and eventually from the liver itself. (liver cells)
● Sinusoids- Blood channels that will lead away from the central vein in the hepatic
lobules. Contain hepatic phagocytes called Kupffer cells.
● Kupffer Cells- hepatic phagocytes that work to clean the blood and remove any debris
from blood in the liver.
● Insulin- help to control blood sugar levels in the body
● Glucagon- help to control blood sugar levels in the body
● Acini Cells- Darker pink cells in pancreas. Digestive cells. Make up 99% of pancreas.
Secrete pancreatic juices and enzymes that assist with the process of digestion.

● Islets of Langerhan- Lighter pink cells. Endocrine portion of the pancreas. Produces
insulin and glucagon that regulate blood pressure levels.




● Small Intestine- contains four layers of tissues
● Serosa- outermost layer. Thin layer of tissue that covers each organ in the digestive
tract.




● Muscularis externa- next layer deep to the serose. Made up of longitudinal and
circular layers. Thickest layer.

● Submucosa- deep to the Muscularis Externa. Lighter pink layer. CONTAINS
BRUNNER'S GLANDS. Also contains lymphocytes :b cells & t cells, that will destroy
pathogens in intestinal tract before it enters the bloodstream.




● Brunner's glands- Secrete bicarbonate mucous that neutralizes maacidsterials in
the stomach.
● Mucosa- innermost lining of the digestive tract. Made up of finger-like projections




called villi.
● Villi- help to increase surface area of mucosa to help increased area for absorption take
place
