TEST REVIEW TEMPLATE
Your name: Deshia Waterson
Name of instrument: Early Math Diagnostic Assessment
Author(s) of instrument: Psychological Corporation
Date of current publication: 2002 Publisher: Pearson
Base all answers on information provided in MMY (available through Liberty University Online
Library), course textbook, and, if necessary, recent scholarly sources.
1. List all “global” areas and their corresponding subtests that comprise each global area (add more
or less space as needed):

A. List all Global Areas (aka Domains, Clusters): These areas comprise groups of subtests.

Math Reasoning

Numerical Operations

B. List all Subtests:

counting, identifying shapes and patterns, and solving single- and multi-step problems related to

time, money, measurement, and probability. identifying and writing numbers, counting, and

calculating

2. State the age range this test can be administered to:

Prekindergarten to Grade 3.

3. State the purpose of the test:
Designed to 'screen and identify children at risk for math difficulties.

4. Describe the qualifications required for an examiner to administer this test:

The Early Math Diagnostic Assessment (EMDA) is typically administered by licensed teachers,

special education staff, or trained specialists. Some schools allow trained assistants or education

students to help under supervision. Administering the test requires knowledge of math concepts,

testing procedures, and accommodations for students with disabilities.

5. List the types of scores (e.g., standard scores, percentile rank, scaled scores, age equivalent, grade
equivalent, etc.) this test uses to report results. Your answer should follow the examples stated
here. Do not list anything else.

Raw score, percentile rank, standard score, performance level, growth score

6. List the instrument’s technical data (including actual numbers) regarding validity, reliability, and
standardization / normative process.

Validity:

The EMDA's validity is supported by content, construct, and criterion-related evidence. Expert

reviews and field tests helped select test items, and analyses ensured their accuracy. However,

details on these analyses are only in the examiner's manual, not fully presented.

Reliability:

The EMDA's reliability measures how consistent and stable the scores are. Split-half reliability,

which checks score precision, ranged from .71 to .93. Score consistency, measured by the standard

error, ranged from 3.97 to 8.08 points. Test-retest reliability, which checks stability over time,

ranged from .92 to .96 over a 7–45 day period (average 10 days) using a sample of 123 K–Grade 3

students. However, this small sample may not fully represent the original study group or the U.S.

Census, and no stability data is available for PreK students.

Standardization/Normative Process:

The EMDA norms are based on the WIAT-II standardization sample, collected from 1,374

children (ages 5–8) in PreK to Grade 3 between 1999 and 2001. The sample was designed to match

the 1998 U.S. Census based on grade, gender, race/ethnicity, region, and parents' education. It

included students from public and private schools, those with learning disabilities, and gifted

students but excluded non-English speakers.

7. State the approximate time needed to administer the test:
typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to administer

8. Did this test’s norming population include individuals with special needs and/or limited English
proficiency? Explain.

Yes, the EMDA’s norming population included individuals with special needs but excluded those with

limited English proficiency. The sample included students with learning disabilities, speech/language
