700.1P The Teacher: Performance-Based Assessment

TASK 1 -- The Texas Educator Code of Ethics: Read the instructions and both scenarios and
write a paragraph of at least 1/2 page for each scenario, responding to the prompts. Answer the
three questions at the end of each scenario, in which you identify the behavior(s), if any, that you
believe violate standards in the Educator Code of Ethics. You must cite the standard from the
Code of Ethics, using the letter, number and exact language of the standard. Explain your
reasoning in the selection of the standard(s) or your reasoning if you believe no standards were
violated. Additionally, describe an alternate behavior that is detailed and appropriate to take in
that situation. Use professional language, spelling and grammar in your response.

1. Scenario 1 Response:

Hoping to raise money for the transportation for the student transportation to school and other
events, teacher Mr. Moore devises a program to sell breakfast items that becomes a hit at
Hastings High. But one small event caught the attention of one of the sponsors, Mrs. Summer.
She keeps an eye on the program after noticing a decline in the candy fundraiser. One day while
watching over the breakfast sales, Mrs. Summer sees Mr. Moore slip some money into his own
pocket while helping a student who was struggling to handle the cash. Of these two faculty
members mentioned by name in Scenario 1, it is Mrs. Summer that is in violation of The Code of
Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators, specifically this:
● (2) Ethical Conduct Toward Professional Colleagues. (A) Standard 2.1. The educator
shall not reveal confidential health or personnel information concerning colleagues unless
disclosure serves lawful professional purposes or is required by law.
The reasoning for this violation was that Mrs. Summer revealed Mr. Moore’s personnel
information to other faculty members, that being his “expensive” car, implying that he was using
funds from the Life Skills breakfast sales to help pay for the vehicle. Mrs. Summer should
certainly have handled this situation differently. For one, she did not have to jump to conclusions
based on one incident with zero context (seeing Mr. Moore slip money into his pocket). If she
was concerned about the money she could have shared that with the administration directly.
Instead her watercooler talk served as nothing more than gossip, making for a tense workplace
and wild case of miscommunication.

2. Scenario 2 Response:

Scenario 2 is about a new, evolving challenge in education: teachers and technology. A
fifth-grade teacher by the name of Mrs. Nelson is attempting to use an app called Remind. She
hopes this will increase participation from both students and their parents given the app’s ability
