, 2 (a) Table 1 below shows data for the contribution of tourism to Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) of three different groups of countries, Developed Countries,
Emerging Countries and Low-income Developing Countries (LIDCs).

The contribution of tourism to the GDP of countries was categorised as either
higher or lower than the global mean (2.5%).
A Chi-squared test was used to establish whether there was a statistically
significant difference in the contribution of tourism to the GDP for these three
groups of countries.
The null hypothesis tested was:
There is no significant association between the level of economic development of a

country and the contribution of tourism to its economy.

The alternative hypothesis was:
There is a significant association between the level of economic development of a
country and the contribution of tourism to its economy.
The data for both O (the observed values) and E (the expected values) are shown
below in Table 1.
