What are the 6 classes of nutrients essential to health? ANSWER - Carbohydrates (energy
providing)
Fats or lipids (energy providing)
Proteins (energy providing)
Vitamins (non-energy providing)
Minerals (non-energy providing)
Water (non-energy providing)


What are the macronutrients and are they needed in large or small amounts? ANSWER -
carbs, fats, and proteins- large amounts


What are carbs? ANSWER - the primary source of fuel for our bodies. Made up of carbon,
hydrogen, and oxygen.


What are fats? ANSWER - an important source of energy for our bodies at rest and
during low intensity exercise. Made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen as well, but much
less oxygen and water than carbs so they pack together more densely thus providing more
energy (fuel).


What are proteins? ANSWER - support tissue growth, repair, and maintenance. We break
down dietary proteins into amino acids and reassemble them to build our own body
proteins. Proteins can provide energy but are NOT a primary source of energy. Made up of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.


What are vitamins? ANSWER - build and maintain bones, muscles, blood, immune
system, and ensure healthy vision.
