Literary Analysis: The Sweet Hereafter

The plot in the novel circulates a small town in which a tragedy had occurred. There are

mixed reactions from the town's fox. The accident even compels law enforcers to visit the city

and disguise themselves, hoping that the victims will be compensated. Some of the characters opt

for a fresh new start, but some of them are faced with the harsh reality of their dreams being

shuttered before their very own eyes, whereas some resort to killing the pain of losing loved ones

through alternate means. Some main characters like Dolores and Billy create themes that present

a hidden meaning of the message behind what the author wanted to pass on to the reader. These

include love, endurance, and heartbreaks.

Heart Breaks

The accident led to countless losses of lives, which meant that numerous hearts were

broken due to the tragedy. Dolores, who was the bus driver, witnessed the whole thing, and even

if she survived, the trauma still haunts her. She even lacks the courage to visit the graveyards of

the victims because she cannot find strength in her.

Billy loses four of his kids in a car accident, which breaks him both physically and

emotionally. To cope with the pain caused by the tragic loss, he resorts to drinking, hoping that
