This document consists of an impressive amount of extensive notes on the Gothic genre, tailored to Component 2 of A-level OCR English Literature: comparative and contextual study. It is the perfect context document for this second exam, feeding both the Gothic unseen extract portion and the comparative essay. Thorough knowledge of the Gothic genre is integral to the exam and the A-level as a whole; examiners are not just looking for people who check the boxes and understand how the genre has evolved, but people with intense, thorough knowledge of the genre as a whole who can analyse its trends and its influences on different texts. This document features a Gothic timeline, with named novels to conduct further research on (or see my other document for sale, which has notes on Gothic novels arranged by concept) and intensive socio-historical context notes, as well as giving an outline of how the genre has shifted throughout the ages, and more importantly: why. With this document, you will be able to write essays on the Gothic genre confidently and insightfully, pushing you into the level 5/6 band to achieve an A or an A*. I sat the exam in the Summer 2026 series and I am currently predicted an A/A*. I wish you the best of luck for your exam, and I hope you find this document as useful as I have!

,Why the Gothic is difficult to define…
● Early examples of the Gothic genre (Radcliffe*, Lewis**) seemed to be writing with a
formula back at the end of the 18th century. They had creepy buildings, supernatural
elements, a damsel in distress, and a typically Gothic villain.
● In the late 18th century, novels adhered so closely to these conventions that they
were often mistaken for satire or accused of plagiarism (Northanger Abbey***).
● The genre is still categorised by its capability for diversity and mutability.
● There is no single time period for the gothic genre like there is for Romanticism or
Victorian.
○ It is timeless; it began in 1764 with Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto and since
then has been a tool to undermine cultural, historical, and literary perceptions
of past and present, civilisation and barbarism, old romance and new literary
realism.
○ Recent criticism says that we should define the ‘gothic’ as a mode of writing
to respond to contemporary conflicts and anxieties, for example how Dracula
deals with anxiety about reverse colonialism.

* Ann Radcliffe. The Mysteries of Udolpho. She was a pioneer of the Gothic genre and her novels are most notable for their
ability to infuse terror in the reader with Romantic sensibility.
** Matthew Gregory Lewis. The Monk. Often referred to as Matthew Gregory ‘Monk’ Lewis due to the success (and notoriety) of
his novel. Also a successful dramatist.
*** Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen.
