1. Cellular Mechanisms:
How does iron deficiency specifically impair hemoglobin synthesis and the function of red blood
cells?
- Iron is a nutrient that stimulates red blood cell production. Iron deficiency impairs the
body’s ability to produce hemoglobin. Iron deficiency will lead to decreased production
of the red blood cells, therefore decreasing hemoglobin synthesis (Jones & Bartlett,
2023).
What role does iron play in the production of ATP and overall cellular energy metabolism?
- Iron is needed in order for the Mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) to function
properly. ATP production primarily occurs in the Mitochondria and without an adequate
iron supply there will not be enough cellular energy. “The prevalence of iron-containing
proteins in the mitochondria attests to the importance of iron in normal mitochondrial
function (Roemhild, 2021).”
How might Sarah’s symptoms (fatigue, dizziness, pallor) be explained at the cellular level?
- According to WebMD (2025), iron deficiency anemia impairs hemoglobin synthesis,
reducing oxygen delivery and causing symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and pallor.
Sarah’s symptoms arose because she had reduced oxygen levels being delivered to her
cells. Oxygen is crucial for cellular production, therefore when cellular production
decreases, energy levels decrease too. Lack of iron leads to decreased RBC production,
