WEEK 2 STUDY GUIDE

Hi AP Campers and welcome to Week 2: Molecular & Ionic Compound Structure and
Properties!
This unit looks at the difference between ionic and covalent bonds, intramolecular
forces and bond energy. We will also look at the structure/properties of metals, ionic
compounds, and alloys. Another topic you will learn this week is how to draw Lewis
diagrams and predict molecular geometry using VSEPR theory. Lastly, we will examine
hybrid orbitals in compounds such as methane.
Similar to last week, this guide includes key insights or tips to help you avoid common
misunderstandings and remember key concepts. The end of this guide includes
questions to reinforce your studying and a bonus question for students looking for a
challenge.

Chapter 2 Overview: Molecular and Ionic Compounds
2.1 Types of Chemical Bonds
● Ionic bonds: electrons are either removed or added to form bonds. Typically, ionic
bonds are between a metal & a non-metal
● Covalent bonds: electrons are shared between two atoms. Generally, between
metal & non-metal.
● Electronegativity differences between atoms creates polarity.
-Non-Polar Covalent, 0 < ∆𝐸𝑁 < 0.4
-Polar Covalent, 0.4 < ∆𝐸𝑁 < 1.7
-Ionic, ∆𝐸𝑁 > 1.7
