Workbook Answer Keys for
Understanding Anatomy & Physiology
(4th Edition) by Thompson (All 25
Chapters included)

Chapter 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
1. Define anatomy.
Anatomy is the study of the structure and shape of the body and its parts, as well
as the relationships among these structures.

2. Define physiology.
Physiology is the study of how the body and its parts function or work.

3. What is the relationship between anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy and physiology are inseparable because structure (anatomy) determines
function (physiology), and function influences structure. You cannot fully
understand one without the other.

4. List the levels of structural organization in the human body from simplest to
most complex.
Chemical level → Cellular level → Tissue level → Organ level → Organ system
level → Organismal level.

5. What is the chemical level of organization?

,It is the simplest level, consisting of atoms (such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen,
nitrogen) and molecules (such as water, proteins, and DNA) that make up all
matter in the body.

6. Describe the cellular level of organization.
At this level, molecules combine to form cells, which are the basic structural and
functional units of life.

7. What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells and the materials surrounding them that work
together to perform a specific function.

8. Define an organ.
An organ is a structure composed of two or more different types of tissues that
work together to perform a specific function.

9. What is an organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs that work together to carry out a major
function necessary for survival.

10. Name the 11 organ systems of the human body.
Integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular,
lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.

11. Which organ system serves as a boundary between the body and the external
environment?
The integumentary system (skin, hair, nails).

,12. What is the primary function of the skeletal system?
The skeletal system provides support and protection, allows for movement (with
muscles), stores minerals, and produces blood cells.

13. Which organ system is responsible for coordination and control of body
functions?
The nervous system.

14. How does the endocrine system differ from the nervous system in its method
of communication?
The endocrine system uses chemical messengers called hormones transported in
the blood to communicate more slowly but with longer-lasting effects, whereas
the nervous system uses electrical signals (nerve impulses) for rapid, short-term
communication.

15. What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
The cardiovascular system transports blood, carrying oxygen, nutrients,
hormones, and waste products throughout the body.

16. Which organ system is primarily responsible for gas exchange?
The respiratory system.

17. What is the main purpose of the digestive system?
To break down food into absorbable molecules that can enter the blood for
distribution to body cells, and to eliminate indigestible waste.

, 18. Which two organ systems are primarily responsible for maintaining fluid and
electrolyte balance?
The urinary system and the endocrine system.

19. What is the function of the reproductive system?
To produce offspring and, in females, to nourish and support the developing
fetus.

20. Define homeostasis.
Homeostasis is the condition of maintaining a stable internal environment within
the body despite changes in the external environment.

21. What is a feedback loop?
A feedback loop is a cycle of events in which the status of a body condition is
monitored, evaluated, changed, re-monitored, and re-evaluated.

22. Distinguish between negative feedback and positive feedback.
Negative feedback reverses a change in condition to bring the variable back to its
normal range (e.g., body temperature regulation). Positive feedback amplifies or
enhances a change, pushing the variable further from its starting point (e.g.,
childbirth contractions).

23. Give an example of negative feedback in the body.
When blood pressure rises, baroreceptors detect the increase and send signals to
the brain, which then sends signals to the heart and blood vessels to decrease
heart rate and dilate blood vessels, lowering blood pressure back to normal.
