Explain the Concept of Progressive Discipline, Why It Is Necessary, and
Examples of Common Disciplinary Measures That Align with Progressive
Discipline

Introduction

Discipline in the workplace is an essential part of human resource management
because it helps maintain order, fairness, productivity, and compliance with
organizational rules and policies. Employees are expected to perform their duties
according to established standards and to comply with company rules and legal
requirements. However, situations may arise where employees fail to meet these
expectations due to misconduct, poor performance, absenteeism, insubordination,
or other workplace violations. When this happens, employers must respond
appropriately.

One of the most widely accepted approaches to employee discipline is progressive
discipline. This approach emphasizes correcting employee behaviour rather than
immediately imposing severe punishment. Progressive discipline provides
employees with opportunities to improve while ensuring that disciplinary actions
are fair, consistent, and proportional to the seriousness of the misconduct.

The Concept of Progressive Discipline

Progressive discipline is a structured and systematic process used by employers to
address employee misconduct or unacceptable behaviour by applying disciplinary
measures that increase in severity if the employee fails to improve. The primary
goal is not to punish employees but to encourage behavioural change, improve
performance, and prevent future misconduct.

The principle behind progressive discipline is that employees deserve an
opportunity to understand their mistakes, receive guidance, and correct their
behaviour before severe disciplinary action, such as dismissal, is considered. It is
based on fairness, consistency, transparency, and respect for employees' rights.
