HOW DO ORGANISMS REPRODUCE

Document preview thumbnail
Preview 4 out of 33 pages

Reproduction is one of the most important characteristics of living organisms. Every organism has a definite life span and eventually dies. If new individuals were not produced, the species would become extinct. Therefore, reproduction is the biological process that ensures the continuity of life on Earth. Although reproduction is not necessary for the survival of an individual organism, it is essential for the survival of a species. During reproduction, organisms pass their genetic information (DNA) to their offspring. This transfer of hereditary material helps maintain the characteristics of a species while also introducing variations that enable organisms to adapt to changing environments.

Chapter 8: How Do Organisms
Reproduce?

Detailed, Easy-to-Understand Study
Notes

1. Introduction

One of the most important characteristics of
living organisms is the ability to reproduce.
Every living organism has a life cycle—it is
born, grows, reproduces, and eventually
dies. If organisms did not reproduce, their
species would disappear from the Earth.

Reproduction ensures the continuity of life
by producing new individuals of the same
species.

2. What is Reproduction?

Definition

,Reproduction is the biological process by
which living organisms produce new
individuals (offspring) of the same species.

The offspring inherit characteristics (genes)
from their parents.

Examples

 Humans produce babies.

 Birds lay eggs.

 Mango trees produce seeds.

 Amoeba divides into two daughter cells.

3. Importance of Reproduction

Reproduction is necessary because it:

 Ensures the continuation of species.

 Maintains the population of organisms.

 Transfers hereditary characters (genes)
from parents to offspring.

,  Produces variations (especially in sexual
reproduction), which help organisms
adapt and evolve.

 Replaces organisms that die.

Note: Reproduction is important for the
survival of a species, but it is not essential
for the survival of an individual
organism.

4. Why Do Organisms Reproduce?

Living organisms reproduce because:

 Every organism has a limited lifespan.

 New individuals replace older ones.

 It helps maintain ecological balance.

 It allows species to continue over
generations.

5. DNA and Reproduction

, What is DNA?

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is the
hereditary material present in the nucleus of
cells.

Functions of DNA

 Stores genetic information.

 Controls body characteristics.

 Transfers traits from parents to offspring.

DNA Copying

Before reproduction, DNA makes an exact
copy of itself.

Sometimes, small mistakes occur during
copying. These are called variations.
