The roles nurses play in caring for a patient is indispensable but not independent. In a

healthcare setting, nurses work alongside a plethora of people creating a multidisciplinary team.

According to an article titled The Multidisciplinary Team Approach and Quality of Care, “The

core function of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) is to bring together a group of healthcare

professionals from different fields in order to determine patients' treatment plan” (Cequier et al.,

2020, para 1). All members of this team perform different jobs that correlate with one another

and contribute to the improvement of the patient’s condition. Medical doctors and nurses are

usually the first to respond to patient needs, but there are many other players that share

responsibility in providing quality patient care. For example, dieticians, physical therapists and

social workers are key players in patient care. Specifically, pharmacists are affluential in the day-

to-day care of most patients in a hospital.

Pharmacists’ Education and Salary

Becoming a pharmacist requires a considerable amount of education and training.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, pharmacists need to have a Doctor of

Pharmacy degree from an accredited pharmacy program. Furthermore, most pharmacy programs

prefer applicants to have a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or other healthcare related

field. The number of years it takes to complete a pharmacy program varies from 3 to 6 years,

depending on educational background. Upon completion of the program, all states require

pharmacists to take and pass the North American Pharmacy Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) and the

Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE). There is also a state specified number of

hours as an intern that prospective pharmacists must complete. Many pharmacists will opt to do a

residency or fellowship program for additional training and opportunities working in various

specialties. Once licensed, pharmacists can choose to earn other certifications like those to
