Approved - answer Acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.
Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) - answer An organization, office, or individual
responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard, or for approving
equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure.
Code - answerA standard that is an extensive compilation of provisions covering broad
subject matter of that is suitable for adoption into law independently of other codes and
standards.
Guide - answerA document that is advisory or informative in nature and that contains
only non mandatory provisions. A guide may contain mandatory statements such as
when a guide can be used, but the document as a whole is not suitable for adoption into
law.
Labeled - answerEquipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol, or
other identifying marks of an organization that is acceptable to the authority having
jurisdiction and concerned with product evaluation, that maintains periodic inspection of
production of labeled equipment or materials, and by whose labeling the manufacturer
indicates compliance with appropriate standards or performance in a specified manner.
Listed - answerEquipment, materials, or services included in a list published by an
organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with
evaluation of products or services, that maintains periodic inspection of production of
listed equipment or materials or periodic evaluation of services, and whose listing states
that either the equipment, material, or service meets appropriate designated standards
or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose.
Shall - answerIndicates a mandatory requirement.
Should - answerIndicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not required.
Standard - answerA document, the main text of which contains only mandatory
provisions using the word "shall" to indicate requirements and which is in a form
generally suited for mandatory reference by another standard or code or for adoption
into law. Non mandatory provisions are not to be considered a part of the requirements
of a standard and shall be located in an appendix, annex, footnote, informational note,
or other means as permitted in the Manual of Styles for NFPA Technical Committee
Documents.
, Adiabatic Heating - answerThe heating of a gas caused by it's compression.
Aerosol - answerAn intimate mixture of a liquid or a solid or a solid in a gas; the liquid or
solid, called the disperse phase, is uniformly distributed in a finely divided state
throughout the gas, which is the continuous phase or dispersing medium.
Alarm System - answerAn alarm device or system of alarm devices gives an audible,
visual or other form of alarm signal about a problem or condition. Alarm devices are
often outfitted with a siren.
Area Alarm System - answerA warning system within an area of use that provides
continuous visible and audible surveillance of Category 1 and Category 2 medical gas
and vacuum systems.
Category 3 Alarm System - answerA warning system within an area of use that provides
continuous visible and audible surveillance of Category 3 medical gas systems.
Local Alarm System - answerA warning system that provides continuous visible and
audible surveillance of medical gas and vacuum system source equipment at the
equipment site.
Master Alarm System - answerA warning system that monitors the operation and
condition of the source of supply, the reserve source (if any), and the pressure in the
main lines of each medical gas and vacuum packing system.
Alternate Power Source - answerOne or more generator sets, or battery systems where
permitted, intended to provide power during the interruption of the normal electric
service; or the public utility electrical service intended to provide power during
interruption of services normally provided by the generating facilities on the premises.
Ambulatory Health Care Occupancy - answerAn occupancy used to provide services or
treatment simultaneously to four or more patients that provides, on an outpatient basis,
one or more of the following: (1) treatment for patients that renders the patients
incapable of taking action for self-preservation under emergency conditions without the
assistance of others; (2) anesthesia that renders the patients incapable of taking action
for self-preservation under emergency conditions without the assistance of others; (3)
emergency or urgent care for patients who, due to the nature of their injury or illness,
are incapable of taking action for self-preservation under emergency conditions without
the assistance of others.
Ampacity - answerThe maximum current, in amperes, that a conductor can carry
continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating.
Anesthetic - answerAs used in code, applies to any inhalation agent used to produce
sedation, analgesia, or general anesthesia.
