Introduction
The exponential growth of information and communication technology has fundamentally
transformed the landscape of academic and public libraries, revolutionising how information is
accessed, stored, and disseminated (Brophy, 2007). This transformation represents a paradigm shift
from traditional library systems to dynamic digital environments that cater to the evolving needs of
the academic community and the general public (Chowdhury, 2010). Modern libraries are
increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and
from many sources by providing a tremendous amount of information with a variety of digital tools
(Kumar & Kumar, 2016). The integration of ICT has presented both opportunities and challenges,
ranging from improved efficiency and expanded access to issues of digital divide, infrastructure
requirements and ongoing staff training needs (Mutula, 2012). This essay examines the multifaceted
aspects of ICT infrastructure in Library and Information Science, exploring the design of network
topologies, strategies for modernising ancient libraries, appropriate storage solutions, and
technologies for delivering hardcopy materials to distant users. Through careful examination of these
interconnected aspects, this essay provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state of
digital libraries and offers insights into successful practices, persistent challenges, and emerging
trends that will shape the future of libraries.
a. Discuss ICT Infrastructure in LIS
Information and Communication Technology has become the cornerstone of modern library
operations, transforming various aspects of library services, including cataloguing, circulation,
reference services and resource sharing (Kumar & Kumar, 2016). The technical and physical
infrastructure required for establishing and maintaining effective digital library services represents a
crucial aspect of modern academic libraries (Chowdhury, 2010). This encompasses hardware and
software requirements, network infrastructure, storage solutions, and security systems necessary for
digital library operations (Brophy, 2007).
The infrastructure of a modern library begins with robust hardware components including servers,
workstations, network switches, routers, and storage devices. Servers form the backbone of library
operations, hosting the integrated library system, digital repositories, and various applications that
facilitate resource discovery and access (Prabha, 2007). Workstations provide access points for
library staff to manage operations and for users to search catalogues, access databases, and utilise
digital resources (Sani & Yakubu, 2015). The selection and maintenance of appropriate hardware is
essential for ensuring reliable, high-performance library services that meet user expectations (Brophy,
2007).
Software infrastructure is equally critical in library and information science environments. Integrated
Library Systems, which have evolved from simple cataloguing tools to comprehensive management
platforms, enable libraries to manage acquisitions, cataloguing, circulation, serials, and patron
records in a unified environment (Breeding, 2018). These systems have increasingly adopted
web-based architectures, allowing for remote access and easier integration with other systems
