A1: Introduction
Body dissatisfaction is affecting people who have either an overweight or obese body
mass index (BMI) causing psychological distress and disordered eating patterns. The
community-based evaluated applicability of and impact of a Health at Every Size intervention
(HAES) when it comes to increasing body satisfaction among 100 adults aged between 18 and
42 with a BMI considered overweight or obese. In the HAES curricular approach, weight loss
was not the core agenda; rather, it focused on providing quality health care access, intuitive
eating, fun exercises, and adopting sustainable healthy practices.
The main objective of the program was to examine the potential effects of HAES on
increasing body satisfaction using two scales: the Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and the Body
Shape Questionnaire-8 Item (BSQ-8). The secondary included the assessment of changes in
average calorie intake per day and the examination of relationships between pre- and post-
intervention variables. A single group pretest-post-test intervention design was used.
Demographic and anthropometric data, body satisfaction score, and calorie intake at baseline
were determined before the start of the intervention. Participants then undertook the HAES
program, after which the above measurements were repeated to assess changes.
The proposed pre-post evaluation design mirrors real-world practices used in evaluating
real-life HAES programs and enables an analysis of changes that can be attributed to the
program within each subject. The proposed evaluation follows the principles of planning
program evaluation, such as defining objectives and collecting data corresponding to outcomes.
