Romeo and Juliet [Act 3 & 4]
LESSON 1:

1: Who’s talking, and who are they talking to?

2: What’s happening here/what is this quote about?

ANSWERS:

“I pray thee, good Mercutio, let's retire: the day is hot, the Capulets, abroad: and if we meet
we shall not scape a brawl. For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring.”

Benvolio is talking to Mercutio. In this quote, Benvolio is telling Mercutio that they should retire
for the day as the Capulets may be approaching and would start a fight, which would only
escalate because of the hot weather.

“A plague o both your houses, they have made worm's meat of me. I have it, and soundly to
your houses.”

Mercutio is talking to both Romeo and Tybalt as he lay on the ground injured and about to die;
Mercutio curses both their families as he dies.

“And for that offence immediately we do exile him hence.”

The Prince of Verona announces this punishment to the citizens of Verona, the Montagues and
the Capulets. In this scene Mercutio and Tybalt are dead and the citizens of Verona are by the
Prince to ask for justice for Tybalt’s death. The Prince sounds his decision to them, that Romeo
is to be banished.

“That ‘banished,’ that word ‘banished’ Hath slain ten thousand Tybalts.”

Juliet says this to her Nurse when she tells Juliet her news of Romeo’s banishment and Tybalt’s
death. Juliet then says that Romeo’s banishment is much worse than many more deaths of her
cousin, Tybalt.

“Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.”

Juliet says this to Romeo when they spend Romeo’s last night in Verona before he has to leave
the state. She tells him that when he is below the balcony near the tower, he looks as if he is
dead at the bottom a tomb.

“Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o’
Thursday or never after look me in the face.”

, Capulet says this to Juliet when she refuses to marry Paris. Her father threatens to disown her
as his daughter of she is not present at the alter on Thursday.

"God shield I should disturb devotion!—/ Juliet, on Thursday early will I rouse ye."

Paris says this to Juliet when Friar Laurence tells him that he wants to speak with Juliet. Paris
tells her that he will ‘rouse her’ on their wedding day.

"If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help/ Do thou but call my resolution wise/ And with this
knife I’ll help it presently"

Juliet and Friar Laurence are conversing about her marriage. Juliet asks for more counselling on
what should do in this situation. When Friar Laurence gives no help, Juliet tells him, she will
make a knife help her.

"Where bloody Tybalt, yet but green in earth,/ Lies festering in his shroud; where, as they
say,/ At some hours in the night spirits resort—?"

Juliet says this when she debating with herself on whether or not she should drink the sleeping
potion Friar Laurence gave her. She wonders about what it would be like to lay alive in a burial
chamber where Tybalt’s rotting body will be present and also other Capulet ancestors.

"Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink. I drink to thee"

Juliet says this to herself when she discusses whether or not she should drink the sleeping
potion and then she finally decides she would drink it, in the name of her husband, Romeo.

"Death lies on her like an untimely frost/ Upon the sweetest flower of all the field."

Lord Capulet says this when he sees Juliet lying dead on her bed in her chambers. He says that
Juliet is like a beautiful flower that has been a victim of an untimely frost that has left her dead.

"Death is my son-in-law, death is my heir/ My daughter he hath wedded"

Lord Capulet says this when he sees Juliet’s dead corpse in the burial chambers and says that
instead of Paris, death is the man who has married his daughter.
