INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Answers and calculations must be written in the space provided in this question paper.
2. All calculations and answers must be in blue or black ink. NOT pencil, red pen or green
pen. Sketches (if required) may be drawn in pencil.
4. Final and intermediate answers must include units, except in Hardy-Cross calculations
where only the final answer of an iteration needs units.
5. Show calculations otherwise you will only be marked on the answer. Some questions
specifically only ask for the answers.

, Question 1 (40 marks)

A hospital has an emergency water supply system. The horizontal, three-loop hospital network (plan
view shown below) is fed (at point f) from a water tank mounted on a tower. All pipes shown are
galvanized steel and have an internal diameter of 90mm. The required discharge (outflow) rates are
shown, as well as some assumed pipe flow rates.

a) On the redrawn network diagram below, write the magnitude and draw an arrowhead to show the
direction of the flow rates in the network. Also show the magnitude of the flow rate from the tank.
Do not show pipe lengths in the drawing. Only the answers will be marked in this question (no
calculations to be shown on this page).
