Consecutive Measuring A manner of measuring the distances between a series of points where the
measuring device is moved to the subsequent point to take the next
measurement. This is not a recommended technique as it can introduce errors
into the measurements.
Crime Scene The location or area where a crime has been committed or where evidence of
a crime be expected to be found. It includes logical access and escape routes
as well as any other related area remote from the scene.
Cumulative Measuring A manner of measuring the distances between a series of points where the
zero end of the measuring device is left at the reference point and all the
distances are measured from that point. This is the preferred measuring
method.
Direct Evidence A type of evidence that goes directly to the question at hand and requires no
further explanation. The most common type of direct evidence presented in
court is witness testimony.
Individual Characteristic A unique identifying mark made at random to the surface of a shoe, tire, tool,
bullet, or other object.
