, Question 1:
1.1
Selection:
The more obvious components of these problems, such as the selection criteria, have
typically received the most attention in research on the selection of expatriates. Technical
proficiency and domestic track record are by far the two most important selection factors,
according to researchers, in practice. (Doss, 2021)
In the case study the selection for the job opening in China was not done well, because
personal feelings influenced the decision. Joe Ayob has not had a very good performance
record, that alone should stand that he is not suitable for the available job in China. Pieter
Coetzee would have been the perfect candidate because he has 10 years’ experience in that
field and he has experience in respect of all aspects of the complex systems.
Training and development:
Surprisingly, the lack of such programs for expats is more noticeable than the number of
them. (Doss, 2021)
In the case study Joe Ayob is not given any training as he is preparing to depart to China,
there was no pre-appointed visits or any briefing on China that he did. Dave telling Joe to
search the internet to get to know China is not good enough. That will not prepare Joe for
China and that will cause that he will not perform well at his new job.
Repatriation:
Repatriation of expatriates has been recognized as a significant issue for MNCs but has only
just started to get serious attention. Due to the expansion of foreign operations and the
rationalization of headquarters operations, this issue has grown more serious for many
MNEs recently. The majority of MNEs have few open positions that expatriates can fill upon
their return. (Doss, 2021)
In the case study Joe experiences repatriation to the fullest. When he came back from
China, he found that all the unfilled positions were not suited for him. The work that he got
causes his salary to lower, this will in the future lead to him needing to search for another
job.

1.2
• Utilizing them lessens complaints that the organization is ethnocentric.
• They highlight the company's dedication to finding and using talent wherever it may
be.
• They are typically much less expensive.
• They frequently possess cultural sensitivity, which is advantageous.
• Such agreements have increased significantly in recent years as a result of simpler
and more affordable travel as well as advancements in communications technology.
• Examining alternatives to expatriation is another way for organizations to save
expenses.
