Nur al Idah final exam scenarios including and after ‫فصل فيما اليكره للمصلي‬
Scenario 246: A and B are out hunting in the swamps of Florida with a bow and
arrow when Dhuhr time enters. They decide to make jama'ah and pray where
they are. Since the floor is really muddy and they don't want to make their
bows dirty, they pray with them hanging over their shoulders. They aren't
bothered by the bows except when they go into sajdah. Was this the best
choice?
It is makruh to pray with something hanging that also distracts you. Mud wasn't a
valid reason to not take off the bows.
Scenario 247: A wants to pray in his campus interfaith room but notices a
large rug on the floor with a picture of the school mascot; a lion. He sees the
lion's face on one side, and two people sitting, with their backs facing him,
talking on the other side. His two options are to pray on the face area, or
behind them two. Where should he pray?
It's makruh to pray on an image of a living being. It's also not makruh to pray behind
two people facing their backs. He should pray behind them.
Scenario 248: A is praying in the jungle when suddenly a rattlesnake snuck up
behind him. Hearing its hissing, he began fearing for his life. He grabbed a
rock, turned around, and killed it in 2 motions. Can he continue to pray?
His salah did break since he turned away from the qiblah, but without karahah. He
must restart his salah.
Scenario 249: A is praying in the desert when a gust of wind blows sand all
over his new outfit. He notices a caravan approaching from the corner of his
eyes. He quickly dusts off his clothes and wipes his forehead to not look dirty.
Was this okay for him to do? Would it make a difference if the sand was
harming him?

Shaking his clothes is disliked unless it's to prevent it from sticking to the body.
Wiping the sand from his forehead is disliked during salah unless it distracts or
harms him.
Scenario 250: A is praying tahajjud when he realizes that time is running out.
To save time, he prays 2 rakats and he reads Surah al-Ikhlas in both of them.
Was this fine for him to do?
Reading the same 2nd surah in multiple rakats of a nafl salah is fine. ‫
Scenario 251: A is leading B and C in witr and recites the extra dua after the
qunut. B assumes the dua falls under the category of qira'ah and thus, as a
muqtadi, he doesn't recite it behind the imam. C assumes the dua falls in the
same category as the qunut so he recites silently just as he did with the qunut.
Who was correct?
Neither was correct. The correct method would be to recite the qunut, but not the
dua.
Scenario 252: A prayed witr and instead of the qunut, he read 'rabbanaa
aatinaa'. He then learned that Imam Shurunbulali mentions in his amazing
book Nur al-Idah that those who don't know the qunut are permitted to read
another dua. A fears his witr was invalid since he himself does know the
qunut. What should he do?
His witr is valid since it is not a requirement to not know the qunut in order to
substitute it for another dua. (The ibarah doesn't mention it but we learned it in
class.)
Scenario 253: A is leading B in Fajr and recites the qunut. B knows that a
muqtadi should only keep his hands folded when there's a masnun dhikr being
recited. He assumes he must do so here as well even though it's qawmah. Is
he correct?
He should not fold his hands if the imam recites qunut in Fajr, and rather should let
them drop.
Scenario 254 & 255: A forgets to recite the qunut in witr but remembers as he's
in ruku'. Since it's valid to recite the qunut in qawmah in some cases, he does

so here as well. He continues into sajdah after completing the qunut and
finishes the salah as normal. Was that correct to do?
The best option was to not recite the qunut, but since he did it he was correct in not
repeating the ruku'. However in both cases, he must do sajdah al-sahw.
Scenario 256: A is leading B in witr and goes into ruku' upon completing his
qunut. B however is still not finished. What should he do?
He should complete his qunut if he is certain he will catch the imam in ruku'.
Otherwise, he should just follow the imam. ‫
Scenario 257: A is leading B in witr and goes into ruku' without reciting the
qunut. B has not yet gone into ruku', so he recites the qunut. This causes him
to miss the ruku' with the imam. Was he correct?
He was incorrect since he missed the ruku'. He should only read it if he is certain he
will still catch the imam in ruku'.
Scenario 258: A catches the imam in the final sitting of a witr salah. Will he
have to recite the qunut in the rakats he makes up? Would it make a difference
if he caught the imam in the final ruku' instead?
He will have to recite the qunut in the first scenario, but not in the second scenario.
Scenario 259: A misses the happiness of Ramadan and wants to revive that
feeling. He organizes a qiyam night with 4 rakats of qiyam followed by witr, all
in jama'ah. Is this okay to do?
Aside from the issue of nafl jama'ah outside of Ramadan, witr is also not allowed in
jama'ah except in Ramadan. He was incorrect here.
Scenario 260: A has a habit of praying his witr in the final 1/3 of the night even
during Ramadan. He knows it's very virtuous, so after praying taraweeh behind
the imam, he leaves without praying witr. Is that the best option?
It would still be more virtuous to pray with the imam rather than praying it alone in the
final 1/3 of the night.
