What is QSEN?
- The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project funded by the Robert
Wood Johnson (RWJF) Foundation
- QSEN project addresses the challenge of preparing future nurses with the
knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the
quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work
- QSEN has defined quality and safety competencies for nursing and proposed
targets for the KSAs to be developed in nursing pre-licensure programs for each
competency: patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-
based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics (Phases 1 & 2)
- Phase 3: Three goals: (1) promoting continuing innovation in the QSEN
competencies and dissemination of these innovations; (2) developing faculty
expertise required for students to achieve quality and safety competencies; and (3)
create mechanisms to sustain the will to change among nursing program through
nursing textbooks, accreditation and certification standards, licensure exams, and
continued competency requirements
List and define QSEN Standards
1) Safety
=> Safe, effective delivery of patient care requires understanding of the complexity of
care delivery, the limits of human factors, safety design principles, characteristics of
high reliability organizations and patient safety resources
2) Teamwork and Collaboration
=> Safe, effective, satisfying patient care requires teamwork: collaboration with and
communication among members of the team, including the patient and family as
active partners
3) Patient-Centered Care
=> The patient and family are in a partnered relationship with their health care
provider and are equipped with relevant information, resources, access, and support
to fully engage in and/or direct the health care experience as they choose
4) Evidence-based Practice (EBP)
=> Safe, effective delivery of patient care requires the use of nursing practices
