AOD ACTUAL CERTIFICATION PAPER
2026 QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS FULL
SOLUTION.

■ what is the Trans-Theoretical Model of Behavioural Change? Answer:
a model applied to AOD treatment in which we identify where (what
stage) a person is in relation to making changes, and matching treatment
to helping their needs at that specific stage. The aim is to work
collaboratively and improve alliance, and improve the persons'
experience of being understood and supported.

The TTMBC is a cycle:
pre-contemplation: no intention of changing behaviour
contemplation: aware a problem exists, but no commitment to action
preparation: intent upon taking action
action: active modification of behaviour
maintenance: sustained change with new behaviours replacing the old
relapse: falling back into old patterns of behaviour
(back to pre-contemplation)

, ■ define ambivalence. Answer: simultaneously wanting and not wanting
something, or wanting both of two incompatible things (resolving
ambivalence is key to breaking down barriers to motivation in recovery)

■ how do the stages of change in the TTM model link to motivational
interviewing? Answer: TTM provides a theoretical foundation to
understanding how people make behavioural changes. Motivational
Interviewing is a therapeutic approach for how we assist people to
progress through those stages of change

■ what is motivational interviewing? Answer: a therapy technique
developed by Miller and Rolnick (1983). It includes skills and strategies
to increase motivation to change behaviours. It address ambivalence,
considering it a normal part of the process and working through it to
motivate change. It is goal oriented, and client centred.

■ what are some specific strategies and techniques involved in the MI
process? Answer: collaborating with the client rather than confronting
them
evocation (drawing out ideas and not imposing)
prioritising autonomy over authority
showing compassion

■ what are the 3 main functions of addiction? Answer: lack of
boundaries (escape from constrains, rules, and norms)
lack of relationships (substitute for intimacy and connection)
