QUESTION 1

1.1

Reading is one of the most essential skills in the Foundation Phase because it forms the foundation
for all later academic learning and cognitive development. When learners learn to read effectively in
the early grades, they gain the ability to access knowledge across all subjects, including
Mathematics, Life Skills, and Languages (DBE, 2011). Reading is not only about decoding written
words but also about understanding meaning, making sense of information, and developing critical
thinking skills.

In the Foundation Phase, reading supports the development of phonological awareness, vocabulary
growth, and sentence structure knowledge, all of which are necessary for fluent communication.
Learners who develop strong early reading skills are more likely to succeed academically in later
grades because they can independently engage with texts and instructions.

Furthermore, reading enhances cognitive development by improving memory, attention span, and
problem-solving abilities. It also exposes learners to new ideas, cultures, and experiences beyond
their immediate environment, which broadens their worldview. Reading also plays a major role in
emotional development because stories help learners understand feelings, empathy, and social
relationships.

Early reading instruction also helps to reduce future learning difficulties. Learners who struggle
with reading in the Foundation Phase often continue to experience challenges throughout their
schooling, which can lead to poor academic performance and low self-esteem. Therefore, early
intervention is crucial.

In addition, reading promotes lifelong learning habits. Learners who are exposed to engaging and
meaningful reading experiences early in life are more likely to develop a positive attitude towards
reading and continue reading independently in later life. This is why reading is considered the most
important literacy skill in the Foundation Phase curriculum (DBE, 2011; Snow, Burns & Griffin,
1998).
