,MIP1502 ASSIGNMENT 03 ANSWERS - DUE DAT 10 JULY 2026

Question 1

1.1 Write the expressions in simplified form.

1.1.1 Total printing cost, C(n) (1)

C(n) = 6n + 30

1.1.2 Total income, I(n) (1)

I(n) = 10n

1.1.3 Profit, P(n) (1)

Profit = Income − Cost

P(n) = 10n − (6n + 30)

P(n) = 4n − 30

1.2 Evaluate P(12) and interpret your answer. (2)

P(12) = 4(12) − 30

= 48 − 30

= R18

, Interpretation:

If the mathematics club prints and sells 12 packs, they will make a profit of R18.

1.3 Explain the difference between an algebraic expression and an algebraic equation. Use
P(n) and P(n) = 50 in your explanation. (2)

An algebraic expression is a mathematical statement made up of numbers, variables, and
operations but does not contain an equals sign. It represents a quantity that can take different
values depending on the variable.

Example:

P(n) = 4n − 30

This expression represents the profit for any number of packs sold.

An algebraic equation contains an equals sign and states that two expressions are equal. The
purpose of an equation is to determine the value of the unknown variable.

Example:

P(n) = 50

or

4n − 30 = 50

This equation asks for the number of packs that must be sold to make a profit of R50.

1.4 Solve P(n) = 50. Check by substitution and interpret the result. (3)

P(n) = 50
