This Study Guide is designed to help you study Abnormal Psychology, 8th Edition by
Davison & Neale. Each chapter in this guide provides a variety of aids to make your
study easier and more effective.
Overview sections place the chapter in context by describing its relationship to the
chapters that precede and follow it.
Chapter Summary sections, not surprisingly, summarize the chapter.
Study Objectives list the important ideas or concepts to be learned in the chapter.
Key Terms provide a place for you to write in definitions of technical words
introduced in the chapter. Typically, these terms are boldfaced in the text.
Study Questions are questions for you to answer as you read each section of the text.
The Study Guide provides space for you to write your answers to each question.
Research indicates that actually writing the answers is an effective way to study.
Self-Test provides a way for you to check your knowledge of the chapter. The Self-
Test questions cover the content specified by the Study Questions, except for an
occasional asterisked (*) test question.
The Study Guide begins with a chapter on Studying in This Course (and in Other Courses
Too). This chapter is based on my experiences helping students improve their study
skills. It describes a study method (SQ4R) you can use to improve your study skills. It
also provides suggestions for coping with common study problems. I hope you'll find this
chapter helpful.
Abnormal psychology is a fascinating, but complex, topic for many students. Hopefully,
this Study Guide will make your study easier and more effective. It is based on the
experiences, comments, and criticisms of hundreds of students who have used it in my
