Navigating Strategic Challenges - Urban One, Incorporated

Executive Summary

Urban One, Inc. is a reputable player in the field of communication and broadcasting. It is

a well-established organization with a longstanding reputation, which it has built over the years.

Urban One also participates in various community initiatives, which have strengthened its brand

and fostered a positive public perception. Nevertheless, the company faces financial challenges,

including declining revenues and intense competition from new entrants and online digital

platforms. One of my roles in the company’s management team is to identify evidence-based

approaches the company can adopt to resuscitate its financial performance and bolster its

competitiveness. In this regard, I will conduct an internal and external assessment of Urban One

to highlight its weaknesses and threats while asserting the strengths and opportunities it can

leverage to thrive in the market. The company’s turnaround requires an understanding of the

growing competitiveness in the media industry and why Urban One must be creative, agile, and

innovative to stay ahead. My analysis will be structured using the PESTLE model, delving into

Porter’s Five Forces, and adopting the SWOT analysis framework to help discern the

organization’s areas of growth. Such areas will cover enhancing the loyalty of the listeners,

improving its culture, and strengthening its presence on various digital platforms for sustainable

growth. In addition to customer-driven strategies and diversification, this analysis will assert the

importance of effective leadership.

Introduction

Urban One, Inc. is an urban radio and broadcasting company. The organization was

formerly known as Radio One, Inc. It was established by Carthy Hughes, who then became the

first African American woman to pioneer and lead a publicly traded media house in the country.

The towering media mogul started her career in radio at Howard University. Her path to building

a company started from acquiring an AM radio station in Washington, DC., culminating in the

establishment of Radio One, which occurred in 1980. At the helm of the company, Carthy

demonstrated a decisive, strategic, visionary, dedicated, and supportive leadership, which

contributed to the company’s rapid growth. The growth has also seen not only the organization’s

transition from Radio One to Urban One in 2017, but also its diversification into television and

digital communication sites. As the Chairperson of the company, Carthy’s advocacy and passion

for community sensitization and development have scaled Urban One’s reputation and market

size across the country. Headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, the media conglomerate has

grown into one of the largest African-American-owned broadcasting companies in the US,

serving as the leading voice for Black America. It has established various platforms to engage its

audience, including multiple radio stations under Urban One Radio, TV One, and CLEO TV, as

well as Reach Media, a syndicated television programming service, and iOne Digital, a digital

platform.

Lading services provided by the conglomerate include news that the audience can trust,

entertaining and relaxing music, which appreciates the country’s cultural diversity, informative

and educational talks focusing on trending and concerning issues in society, and community-

oriented content tailored to address the needs of its audience. Besides entertaining, informing,

and educating the audience, the media company remains at the forefront when it comes to

advocacy. It champions social justice and amplifies the voices of minority groups, spotlighting

the challenges, expectations, morals, and ambitions of the African American communities. The

company is aware of the increasing competition in the country’s media space, with monologues,

talk shows, podcasts, and established media companies expanding their stations to cater to a

more diverse audience. Notably, its fidelity to the culture and aspirations of its audience, direct

participation in community development initiatives, and relentless advocacy have made it a

media giant to reckon with in the industry. Nevertheless, the challenges associated with stiff

competition and financial constraints persist.

Literature Review

The role of digitization in helping media companies enhance their market growth and

expand their audience has attracted many studies. It is an evolution that heightens not only

productivity in the industry but also performance and satisfaction among listeners. Cioppi et

a(2023) studied this subject and found that when media companies integrate digital technologies

in their operations, their marketing practices evolve and engagement with their audiences

advances. In this regard, Urban One would register significant benefits with digitization. Key

areas of focus in this plan include enhancing content personalization, where the company’s

services, from talk shows to music, resonate with the aspirations and needs of its audience. The

company is also committed to creating a more substantial presence in the digital spaces where

some of the listeners, especially the youthful generation, are domiciled to ensure holistic

preservation of a broader consumer base. With digitization, the company would reach more
