, AIS3705 ASSIGNMENT 02
DUE DATE: 26 JUNE 2026
QUESTION 1
1.1 Analyse the Vision and Mission of the Information Centre and argue whether
the centre fulfils its vision and mission or not. (15)
The information centre visited for this practicum was Durban Central Library. As a
public library, its purpose is aligned with the broader objectives of public librarianship,
which include providing access to information, supporting education and lifelong
learning, promoting literacy, preserving knowledge, and contributing to the social and
economic development of communities (Rubin, 2020). Although the library may not
prominently display a separate vision and mission statement in all sections of the
building, its services and activities clearly reflect these objectives.
One of the most important aspects of the library's mission is ensuring equal access to
information for all members of society. During the visit, it was observed that the library
provides access to a wide range of information resources, including books, newspapers,
magazines, reference materials, and electronic resources. These resources are available
to individuals from different age groups, educational backgrounds, and socioeconomic
circumstances. By making information freely accessible, the library helps reduce
information inequality and empowers community members to make informed
decisions in their personal, academic, and professional lives (Evans & Saponaro, 2018).
The library also supports education and lifelong learning by providing study spaces and
learning resources for learners, students, researchers, and members of the public.
Public libraries are increasingly recognised as centres of community learning where
individuals can acquire knowledge beyond formal educational institutions (Fourie &
Loe, 2016). Durban Central Library creates an environment that encourages
independent learning, academic achievement, and personal development through the
availability of educational materials and study facilities.
