The goal of this assignment is to apply the fundamental design principles to design a database. 1. Organisation and problem identification Find an organization, community business, school, NGOs of your choice in your area or outside your area. Analyze the organization and identify database issues they have, which can be addressed by either designing a new database or improving the existing one. 24 marks For students struggling to get a physical real-world organisation/business (that can allowed access) to analyze, your database design can be based on a case study. You will need to do some research and come up with a detailed description of an organisation/business. 1 1 If you are using your own organization (where you physically contacted and went to the organization) please ensure to obtain signed permission from the organization. 2. Information or data gathering The next time after identification of organizational issues is to collect information you will need to conceptualize a database that would address the issue. You would have to discuss with the stakeholder or other resourceful individuals in the case of physical real-world or articulate information you will generate in the case-study (hence it might be necessary to have discussion with other students’ to brainstorm). You might also need to read other documents to get a better understanding of the domain of expertise of the organisation. The aim of this activity is for you to get a better understanding of the organisation business and the problems at hand (or perceived problem) in order to propose an adequate database. 16 Marks 3. Proposed design models 25 marks Once you have developed an understanding of the problem to be addressed, design the conceptual model based on the business rules you have developed. If you are modifying existing database first present the existing conceptual module then the proposed new one. Transform the conceptual model into a logical model. As with the conceptual model, if it is for database improvement, first present the existing logical model and later the new one. Once you have the logical database model use it to develop Physical model for those improving an existing database, do the same as with conceptual and logical model. 4. SQL Queries - Define and explained transactions - Formulate possible transactional queries (SQL statements) that is in line with the objectives of the database you created. - Example, formulate the SQL statement that you can be used to create database tables for the identified entities. and formulate. -If you have access to database software you use in INF3708, Like Oracle Database 21c Express Edition (XE), you can use it for the creation of table if not you can just create a table using any means. 25 marks 5.
