WESTERN GOVERNORS
UNIVERSITY PSYCHOLOGY D094
TASK 1 Breanna Dudley
Performance Assessment
Task 1 Video Observation

A. Observing and Measuring the Weather. Video #53.
a. This is a second-grade math class around the age of 7-8. There
are approximately 20 students in this class.
b. One developmental stage I observed in this class is social-
emotional learning. This second-grade class of 7- and 8-year-
old students are right on track with their development for their
age, in a social-emotional aspect. This video was great and
appropriate for the age group of the students. Students of
different back grounds and abilities were working with each
other on the task to best understand it and work off each
other’s knowledge. I would say they fall perfectly under the
Conventional stage that Kohlberg studied. They listen to the
teacher well and they are so intrigued in the information she is
delivering to them. They listen to her instruction so well
throughout the activity and it all goes seemingly well. This is a
great example of the Law-and-Order stage within the
Conventional stage. Throughout the instructors notes that are
accompanied with the video she mentions that she has many
students with a variety of disabilities or language barriers. Even
with these barriers, the students are so attentive to what is
happening and very involved. They are learning from watching
other students and grasping the activity.

c. The theory that I picked out from the teacher’s approach was
Collaborative Learning Theory. This placed the students in a
small group of students to learn from while working together.
This encourages peer to peer learning and aligns with
Vygotsky’s importance of cognitive development.

B. Analyzing Social Issues in Small Group Book Club Discussions.
Video #520.
a. This is a 12-15 year old group of 7th and 8th grade students in a
class size of 31.
b. The development stage that I recognized is the Cognitive
Development. More specifically, the Formal Operational Stage
under Piaget’s findings. This group of students is using moral
reasoning, asking questions, and thinking about the bigger
picture throughout their discussions. This state is appropriate
for their age group as Piaget had this stage relevant for children
ages 12 years and older. These students have the knowledge to
answer the easy questions, but they also have the cognitive
development to think outside of the box and discuss bigger
things that assist them with coming to a more knowledgeable
conclusion to the easy question. For example, one group of
students was analyzing social impacts of the characters in the
book to determine how they thought the character would react
to certain social situations.
c. The theory that I picked out from the teacher’s approach was
Vygotsky’s Cognitive Learning Theory. The teacher placed
students into two groups with students who were in different
developmental stages. This allowed for students who struggled
a bit to learn from a more knowledgeable other (MKO) and
those who were the MKO to learn within
their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This aligns
perfectly with Vygotsky’s learning theory.
