Solution. Let y =3x. Then 32x =y 2 , 3x+2 =9 y. The equation becomes
y 2 + 9 y - 36 =0.


By the quadratic formula, we have

y = - 9± 92 - 4(1)(- 36)

i.e., y = - 9±15

Since y =3x > 0, y = - 9+15
