 Gentle slopes, deep river gorges
 Made from older rock- easily eroded
 Less dramatic landforms

2. Borrowdale volcanics- 450 million years ago
 Made from hard volcanic lava
 More dramatic, rugged features
 E.g. peak of Helvellyn

3. Windermere group- 450 million years ago
 Made from limestone, siltstone (sedimentary rocks)
 Creates large landforms
 E.g Lake Windermere
 Lower, flatter landscape

4. Granite- 400 million years ago
 More resistant rock
 Resistant to erosion
 More resistant, rugged landforms

5. Carboniferous Limestone- 320 million years ago
 Made from marine + skeletal remains
 Seas used to cover lake district
 Softer rock
 Forms less dramatic features

 North/ North-East facing slopes
 Less solar radiation- less solar insolation
 Accumulation > ablation (+ mass balance)
