1.1 What is explicit vocabulary learning, and how does it differ from implicit vocabulary
learning? (4)

Explicit vocabulary learning refers to the direct and deliberate teaching of words, where
learners are specifically taught the meaning, spelling, pronunciation, and usage of vocabulary
items. Teachers may use explanations, definitions, word lists, flashcards, and vocabulary
exercises to help learners acquire new words. In contrast, implicit vocabulary learning occurs
naturally when learners are exposed to language through reading, listening, speaking, and
other communicative activities without direct instruction. Learners infer the meanings of
unfamiliar words from the context in which they appear (Nation, 2013).

The main difference between the two approaches is that explicit learning involves conscious
and intentional instruction, whereas implicit learning occurs incidentally through exposure to
language in meaningful contexts (Graves, 2016).

1.2 Identify two vocabulary games and describe how a teacher can use each in the classroom
to develop learners’ vocabulary. (4)

One vocabulary game is Word Bingo. In this activity, learners receive bingo cards containing
vocabulary words. The teacher reads out definitions, synonyms, or descriptions, and learners
identify and mark the corresponding words on their cards. This game helps learners connect
word meanings with vocabulary items while improving word recognition and retention
(Graves, 2016).

Another vocabulary game is Charades. The teacher writes vocabulary words on slips of paper,
and learners take turns acting out the words without speaking. The rest of the class guesses
the word being demonstrated. This activity promotes active engagement and helps learners
understand and remember vocabulary through physical movement and visual association
(Beck, McKeown & Kucan, 2013).
