8362/1 – Non-calculator
Section A
Question 1 was very well answered with almost 90% of the students selecting the correct
option.
On question 2 just over half of the students scored full marks. About another 20% were able
to show a correct method for working out the perimeter but made arithmetic errors.
On question 3 many students incorrectly added the numerators and added the
denominators without attempting to find a common denominator.
Just over 40% of students scored full marks on question 4 with about another 20% scoring
one mark for correctly working out the calculation inside the bracket first. Incorrect responses
usually worked out 20 – 6 first.
Section B
Holiday
The majority of students attempted part 5(a) well with over 80% of the students scoring at
least 2 marks. The most common error came from reading the scale on the horizontal axis
incorrectly.
Part 5(b) was also well attempted with the majority of students scoring at least one mark for
working out that Kam would hire the bicycle for 6 days. There were some misconceptions
when substituting the 6 into the given formula with many students adding 4.5 to (6 + 1)
instead of multiplying.
Around 65% of the students were able to score at least 2 marks on part 5(c), usually for
correctly working out either the median or the range. A common misconception was that a
lower range implied less consistent. Those students that did not score often attempted to
work out the mode or mean instead of the median.
