The Evolution of Geography
• Geography is one of the oldest fields of knowledge because humans have always
needed to know where people are, resources, and places they were located for
survival
• The ancient Greeks were among the first to study geography systematically & divided
the world into three climate zones:
○ Torrid Zone – hot equatorial regions
○ Temperate Zone – moderate middle latitudes
○ Frigid Zone – cold polar regions
• The formal academic study of geography began in Western Europe during the
mid-1800s (19th century)
• Geography remained an important school subject in Europe and the United States
until after World War II
• Beginning in the 1950s, geography was often combined with history and government
into a broader subject called social studies
• Over the last several decades, geographic knowledge among students and adults has
declined
• By the early 1980s, concerns grew about widespread geographic illiteracy, with many
people unable to identify major locations or features on a map
