UNIT 7 TASK 2- Keeping People Safe
Within this fact file I will be promoting the importance
of the duty of care and will include the legal policies and
procedures which are necessary towards keeping
service users healthy and safe. Throughput this Unit I
have gained a deeper understanding of the key
attributes needed to safeguard vulnerable individuals as
well as developed my knowledge so that I can respond
accordingly when dealing with vital situations within a
health and social care setting. I have studied the
diverse types of abuse and the ways in which they can
be dealt with as well as developed my awareness of
infection control in a h&sc setting.

Legislations are a set of laws created by the
government. Legislations have been established to
guide those apart of an organisation so that their
service users gain the most seamless and caring
experience from staff. Having legislations guarantees
the likelihood of a safe environment being formed as
well as the experiencing of a healthy wellbeing due to
patients' rights being met accordingly. (Sanderson, 2024)
Policies are clear guidelines presented by an
organisation so that service users are aware of the
performance of the team and how information is stored-
etc. They ensure that the client's needs are
accommodate and promote the safety of all users and
employees. It is a necessary as it allows service users to
be more connected with the quality of care they receive
and what they are entitled to. (Taylor, 2022)
Health and Safety Work Act (1974):
The main concept of this legislation is to reduce the risk of
danger for employees, owners, volunteers, and visitors within a
workplace. This law is to be applied to all work environments;
however, each setting has a unique set of rules to protect the
employed team and clients from experiencing harm or poor-
quality service. This act includes the general duties of
employers such as the need for adequate training of staff
before allowing them to care for service users, the safe
conduction of operations as well as an intense sense of
provision over personal information, following instructions and
supervision.
The health and safety work act would be beneficial to
implement when relating to the Zebra ward case study as a
failure to complete an observation when prescribing medicine
to both service users increases the risk of them being
, overdosed as another nurse may be unaware that they have
already taken their maximum dosage due to them being very
young this could be extremely detrimental to their health. The
health and safety act promotes for all procedures to be carried
out safely, however in this case the nurse has neglected the
Lucy and Kevins rights as well as the rest of the patients
leaving them all in a vulnerable state which the rest of the
hospital team are not aware of.
In Chichester drop in centre the health and safety work act
must be emphasised more as this is evident due to the level of
panic Zara and many others apart of the centre may
experience as the male staff members must be more careful
before approaching young girls like Zara who are extremely
vulnerable and will be undergoing some sort of psychological
issue. Within this act it states that staff must have adequate
training upon dealing with service users, however they need to
be more cautious and educated upon responding to
abuse/neglect and allow a female staff member to engage with
vulnerable girls like Zara.
Food Hygiene Regulations (2006):
Food hygiene regulations are necessary for ensuring the
protection safety and wellbeing of individuals receiving care.
Food handlers must be professionally trained and supervised
well. All food organisations, as well as food provided within care
homes, hospital and other care settings follow this regulation so
that the service users can consume meals which are beneficial
towards keeping them healthy and protecting them from
experiencing issues such as salmonella from cross
contamination- which is highly prohibited when following this
regulation. (GOV.UK, 2023)
In relation to the Zebra Ward, it is necessary that the kitchen
staff follow the food hygiene regulations as the children are
already in an unstable state and therefore require high quality
nutrition that has been hygienically prepped and carefully
