M3. Analyse the impact of social inequality on diverse groups in society.
Social Inequality: refers to the bias treatment people face throughout
everyday life due to their social status, skin colour, religion, disability, gender,
and age. This is evident as many members of society can experience difficulties
with increasing their wealth due to unfair treatment as well as a decreased
amount of work opportunities, hierarchal power, and access to resources due
to the favouring of specific communities. Institutions such as healthcare,
education, political parties can lower/increase the chances of social inequality
as they maintain immense power of people this can lead to specific groups
experiencing a low-quality life.
I will be discussing the social inequalities experienced due to disability and age
as well provide clear detailing of the impact inequalities have upon these two
social groups.
Age: refers to the number of years a person has lived. It is also a social
construct that categories individuals based on their chronological age and
provides them expected roles, expectations, and privileges within a

Disability: a physical or mental condition that affects their ability to perform
everyday life activities. This includes having mobility, suffering from a mental
disorder such as Alzheimer’s (Dementia) or depression which tend to last
longer than six months/chronic.
Individuals that range from young to an elder face regular assumptions simply
due to their age this is known as stereotyping. Stereotyping is a perception
created of someone else which is commonly misinterpreted, in relation to age
this could be based on their appearance. An example of a common stereotype
an elderly person may face is that they are forgetful, fragile, or technologically
challenged- their brains are not wired enough to fix/build or use computers.
This can cause them to suffer from internalised ageism as it is possible they
,may begin to accept the stereotypes and limit themselves to being valuable
within society. Negative opinions regularly will cause them to feel incapable
and unworthy which can potentially lead to chronic mental disorders such as
depression and anxiety. A low-self-esteem is bound to be formed.
Young people are often misinterpreted as incapable, irresponsible, and
immature this is commonly judged when they are applying for work
opportunities. This reduces the level of self-belief and determination they have
of themselves and will cause them to become less naive and ambitious so that
employees and others in society respect them. TX Teenagers are perceived to
be lazy due to the intense release of technology and social media platforms
within the last few years. This is a common perception people have of them;
however, this habit may have been formed due to the neglection many have
received from older people in society who have created them to be unaware of
their ultimate potential. Young people ae known to be overly sensitive which
society has presented to be a negative, however this could be due to mental
health issues and anxiety caused by a lack of support and consideration within
their lives. Nowadays, young people feel pressured to prove stereotypes are
false which can cause them to experience in an increase of stress. A low self-
esteem can be gained due to facing constant negative remarks which are
always assumptions and nevertheless true.
Individuals that ages range young to elder receive persistent negative attitudes
from other individuals in society due to their age this is identified as prejudice.
Prejudice is a common issue which involves poor treatment of an individual
based on their age. A prejudice opinion can be detrimental to an elder’s health
as many people believe that all elderly are unhealthy and are unable to
partake in physical fitness. This belief may lead to elderly’s receiving a lack of
opportunities regarding work as many will be persuaded to fall into early
retirement and others can be denied as they are perceived to not be as
intelligent as younger workers. This can lead them to gaining a poor self-
esteem as led them to isolating themselves within intellectual conversations
with family/friends and cause them to have doubts about their abilities.
Prejudice towards young people includes have a negative perception on them
and opinions on their abilities to perform tasks simply due to their age. Young
people are constantly portrayed as careless, and many adults assume that they
, contribute nothing to society. They are classed as ‘lazy’ and ‘always on the
phone/game’ perceiving them as antisocial and unworthy of respectable job
opportunities. Many young people are often isolated from conversations of
their own future due to be identified as immature this may cause them to
develop aggressive feelings to those around them as they fail to believe in their
youth. Regular negative opinions upon young people can cause them to face
internalised prejudice this is the belief they are incapable of achieving
milestones such as university due to a lack of self-worth and Un preparation.
Labelling refers to having fixed, commonly negative identities of individuals
due to their age. Elderly people are regularly labelled in a poor manner that
underestimates their abilities, uniqueness, and level of experience. Most
elderly people are described as forgetful as it a common belief that older
people suffer from a poor memory or a cognitive impairment, however this is
not always the case. This could lead to people of an old age believing they are
incapable of achieving their future goals or travelling on their own as society
expects them not too. Caregivers may be resistant in letting them do takes
independently as they believe they are unable too due to their age. This can
lead to the service user feeling restricted. Labelling an older relative as a
‘burden’ has been a common opinion within families as well as health care
systems. This could lead them to receiving poor health care services as doctors
may neglect their symptoms and suggests its due to their ageing. This could
harm their health and wellbeing and increase the chances of health issues
being developed for older people.
A modern label known as a ‘snowflake’ is commonly used to describe young
people as emotionally unstable and easily offended, their empathy is perceived
as a weakness in society. This label can cause their stress levels to increase and
anxiety to fluctuate and leave their self-esteem damaged which can discourage
them from achieving their goals. Those of an early age are believed to be
rebellious and linked to criminal activity. This can lead to young people
becoming isolated in society as they may be viewed as threat to public places.
It is common for teenagers to face unfair treatment by security officers due to
their age. Each one of these labels can portray the divide between generations
as older adults believe that they are more powerful than youth voices. A lack
of support from older generations can have a major impact on the youth's
